Despite COVID-19, work continues at Last Chance Grade on U.S. Highway 101 south of Crescent City in Del Norte County. Pictured below, welders are adding extensions to piles, the tops of these piles will be at the future level of the roadway, a maximum of 18 feet higher than its current level. Both lanes of traffic will be raised to correct this low spot caused by earth movement. These piles have an important job as they will support the fill for the highway. Raising this section of highway is expected to be completed in 2021. This is a necessary improvement to the current alignment to keep it open and safe, but while work continues on finding a long-term solution.
