Road Maintenance Activities - May 2, 2017

From the Caltrans District 1 Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CaltransD1):

Crews ground down a section of U.S. Highway 101 on Last Chance Grade south of Crescent City at postmile 15.2 yesterday to smooth out a 10" elevation difference in the roadway. The sudden drop led some people to refer to it as "the ski jump."

The 10" difference has, of course, been attributed to the area's perpetual slide activity. This section of roadway has been sinking for a while and an emergency project is in the works to build a retaining wall to stabilize the hillside and prevent such drastic shifts in elevation at this location.
